Back-to-school connectivity: what education providers need before term starts

September is the one month schools and academy trusts genuinely can’t afford network problems. Exam data, safeguarding systems, one-to-one device rollouts and parent communications all lean on the internet connection working — and unlike a shop or an office, a school can’t just tell 1,200 people to come back tomorrow if the network falls over. Start with capacity, not just speed

A headline broadband speed means very little once you translate it into real numbers: hundreds of students on personal devices, staff laptops, interactive whiteboards, CCTV, a MIS system, and increasingly cloud-based learning platforms that need to stay responsive all day, every day. Most schools were sized for a fraction of today’s device count. If your network was set up more than three or four years ago, it’s worth asking whether it was built for this level of concurrent use — a proper business broadband connection with headroom, or a dedicated leased line for larger sites, is often the difference between a network that copes and one that visibly struggles by 9:15am.

A worthwhile connectivity review for a school looks at more than the internet line itself: coverage across the whole site including sports halls and outbuildings, separation between staff, student and visitor networks, backup connectivity for MIS and safeguarding systems specifically, and confirmation that fault response times match how urgent a live school day actually is. It’s rarely just one thing that needs fixing — usually it’s two or three smaller gaps that combine into the problem everyone notices as “the Wi-Fi’s bad.”
