Preparing your business network for the autumn budget review

16/10/2025 · lbritton.admin

Autumn is when most businesses start looking seriously at next year’s budget, and connectivity is one of those recurring costs that rarely gets scrutinised the way rent or staffing does — largely because it just works, month after month, without anyone thinking about it. That’s exactly why it’s worth a proper look before the numbers are locked in.

Start by finding out what you’re actually paying for

Pull together every connectivity contract across the business — broadband, any leased lines, mobile, phone systems — and check the actual monthly cost against what was originally agreed. Prices creep upward through annual increases and add-ons far more often than they get reviewed downward, and it’s common to find a business paying for capacity or features it no longer uses.

Check contract end dates now, not in March

Many broadband and leased line contracts include an automatic renewal clause that kicks in with very little warning — sometimes as little as 30 days. Finding out in October which contracts are due to renew in the new year gives you genuine leverage to negotiate, switch, or simply confirm you’re happy staying put, rather than being locked in again by default because nobody checked the date in time.

Match capacity to where the business actually is now

A connectivity setup specified two or three years ago was sized for a different headcount, different cloud usage, and probably fewer devices than the business runs today. If you’ve grown, added remote staff, or moved more systems into the cloud since your last review, it’s worth checking whether your current broadband or managed network setup still has the headroom to match — upgrading proactively is almost always cheaper than the cost of downtime caused by outgrowing it unnoticed.

Factor in resilience, not just speed

A budget review is also the right moment to ask an uncomfortable question: what actually happens if your main connection goes down for a day? If the honest answer is “the business stops,” it’s worth pricing in a backup connection as part of next year’s plan rather than treating it as an optional extra to revisit later.

Bring phone systems into the same conversation

With the traditional phone network switch-off approaching, any business still on legacy phone lines needs to budget for a move to VoIP regardless — so it makes sense to review that alongside broadband and network costs rather than as a separate, later decision. Reviewing everything together often reveals opportunities to bundle and simplify rather than manage several separate supplier relationships.

A simple October checklist

List every contract and its renewal date. Confirm current usage against what’s provisioned. Check whether backup connectivity is in place. Flag anything approaching auto-renewal. Get an independent view on whether current pricing still reflects the market.
